GOVERMENT SEIZES 1700 ACRES OF RUBBER ESTATE In a day long raid conducted by forest and police teams yesterday, government seized the records and took control of two sprawling rubber estates. The deputy forest officer Mr.Rangegowda said that 616 acres of rubber estate at Koyanad and 1074 acres at Kadamakal were seized in a huge operation. The seizure comes as the estates owned by companies on lease from the government had flouted the agreements. These estates were leased to companies by the then British government during 1913 for 99 years. The companies flouted the rules by selling the estates to third parties, growing other crops, not paying the yearly installments etc. The recently transferred Conservator of Forests Mr.Venkatasubaiah had ordered the seizure, before the term of 99 years ended. Over hundred armed forest guards took part in the operation. BOATS TO FERRY PEOPLE ACROSS The onslaught of incessant rains in Kodagu is threatening the life of many with water level in rivers and streams rising alarmingly high. The district administration has geared up for the rescue operations and boats are arranged in few places to ferry people across. A motor boat is installed at Dubare forest area which will function round the clock. Huge trees are falling across the roads disturbing transport while electric poles and telephone polls are thrown all over. The services are badly hit. An enraged elephant lifted a Maruthi omni with its trunk at Siddapur and dumped it down. A tree fell on a new Ambassador car at Cherambane, causing injury to three, seriously injuring the driver. A lorry and a bike got entangled between live electric wires as a high voltage poll fell on the main road at Madikeri. Napoklu, Bagamandala and few interior villages are cut off from the main towns as main roads are inundated. The water level at Harangi reservoir has reached 2809 feet, whereas it was 1617 feet, last year. The inflow is 2145 cusecs. |
