AIDS FEAR IN VILLAGE; NUMBER RISING IN KODAGU;

Maragod is a tiny village near Madikeri. A suspected case of aids in this village is sending ripples of confusion and fear. A youth club volunteers approached the DHO here and explained that  the presence of suspected HIV person is causing great concern in the village.

Though Kodagu has smallest number of Aids patients in the state, a mild increase in its number has alarmed people and officials.

The District health officer Mr.Vishwanath told this correspondent that Kodagu has five irreparable aids cases and another 126 tested positive. What concerns them most was that seven persons tested positive in the month of July itself.

While Kodagu is the district with less cases of AIDS, Bijapur and Bagalkot have eight percent of their population tested positive.

Dr.Vishwanath told that the government has introduced intensive programmes to educate people and younger generation. Teachers are trained to educate pupil in the education institutions. Seminars would be held and questions would be asked to educate children about safe sex. The children would also be given an opportunity to write their questions and put them in a box, to maintain secrecy and avoid embarrassment.
