ROAD MISHAP CLAIMS ONE;A girl student died and a church father was injured as a jeep they were traveling in rammed against a lorry, yesterday. Jyothi, 14, was killed and church father George was injured seriously as a jeep he was driving was hit by a lorry in a curve near Somwarpet. Father, serving at Koppa church was taking the girl to Shanivarsanthe to admit her in Sacred Heart School there. He is shifted to Mangalore with multiple injuries and fracture. Somwarpet police arrested the lorry driver who tried to escape from the spot after a chase. PREMA CARIAPPA RECOGNISED;Member of the Parliament, Mrs.Prema Cariappa has been appointed as the Parliamentary secretary in New Delhi, according to sources. AICC president Mrs.Sonia Gandhi made her appointment, the report said. 167 CANDIDATES IN APMC FRAY;About 167 candidates have filed their nomination papers to contest APMC elections to be held on May 29th. The nominations poured in on the last day yesterday to contest 36 posts in three APMCs of Kodagu. 52 nominations are filed at Madikeri. 51 at Gonicoppal and 63 at Somwarpet. ELEPHANT OPERATION;The forest departmentds of Kodagu and Hassan are all set for a joint operation to nab a rogue elephant at Somwarpet range. The government has sanctioned permission to nab the rogue elephant, which has claimed lives and has been destroying crops in Shanivarsanthe, Hassan regions. Forest officer Mr.M.B.Monnappa has said that the department is also releasing rupees 3.42 lakhs as compensation towards loss of crops and rupees one lakh to the family of a deceased, all caused by this tusker with 1.5 ivory. APPAIH MEMORIAL TO BE INSTALLED;A memorial in the name of warrior of Kodagu, Guddemane Appaiah would be installed at madikeri. Announcing this in a press conference, the working president of the committee Mr.T.P.Ramesh told that the foundation stone for the memorial would be laid on May 9th. British hanged Guddemane Appaiah to death in front of Fort at Madikeri during 1837. MLA Mr.K.G.Bopaiah told that the committee is celebrating anniversary in the name of Appaiah for the present generation to know the greatness and importance of patriots who brought independence to the Country. |
