GOVERNMENT CLOSES DECADE OLD POLYTECHNIC;March 4, 2007 The government polytechnic college at Kushalnagar, having seen 45 yeatrs will now be closed! The reason? Government has decided to upgrade it as a degree college of engineering! The government’s decision to close the only polytechnic at Kushalnagar in the name of up gradation has invited public wrath. They state that the polytechnic producing hundreds of students each year since 45 years is unreasonably closed and up gradation is done at the cost of it. Students used to study here, hailing from all over the state and the polytechnic was functioning well. The polytechnic was inaugurated by the then chief minister S.Nijalingappa during 1962. It was producing 275 students each year. Minister D.H.Shankaramurthy confirmed the closure during his recent visit to Kodagu. He stated that polytechnic and engineering colleges cannot co exist at one place and this is the reason why polytechnic has to be closed. The existing polytechnic however was suffering from lack of instructors. The students fed of complaining to the local representatives and government had appealed to the president of India to rectify the problem. The president in turn had asked the state government through the governor to fill the vacant posts immediately. The public now complain that the government, instead of acting on president’s instruction has decided to close the polytechnic and show on record that they are upgrading it as a degree college of engineering. People have demanded that the government retains Polytechnic along with the engineering college. |
