PETROL PETROL EVERY WHERE NOT A DROP A SELL!Madikeri February 14, 2008 While water flew on either sides of Boikeri road just a day before, petrol gushed down from the drains yesterday morning! It was not due to a miracle. A petrol tanker bashed against the hillock, developing a crack. As is common in the deep curve at Boikeri, 5 KMs from here, and a petrol tanker heading from Mangalore to Chennai hit the hillock around 5.30 a.m. Accident occurred as the driver tried to avoid hitting two lorries stranded in the middle of the road. The break failed, said the driver. People living in this area are sensitive to accident sounds as it is common feature in this curve. Sure enough, they all rushed with buckets, cans and vessels to collect petrol. Some even took drums and collected it. Few from Madikeri rushed with their cars. Petrol spread the high way inviting trouble. However, the ambulance appearing at the sight after sometime organized a pit by using an excavator and allowed petrol to enter it. Mechanical foam was sprayed to petrol to avoid it from catching fire. Police arrived at the spot by 8 a.m. The morning traffic was held for more than three however before the tanker was removed from the spot. Though the villagers often make merry with diesel spill, Coconut, milk and other items being strewn on the road during such accidents in the curve, yet they said that the road should be straightened to avoid accidents. SOLDIERS BODY CREMATED;Soldier Tilaks body was cremated with military and police honors today at his native Hysodlur in South Kodagu. The grief stricken family received the body which arrived here after a delay. The body arrived at Bangalore yesterday night. MLC Arun Machaiah, ZP member M.K>Nanjappa, president and vice president of Gonicoppa Gram Panchayath, M.K.Thomas and B.N.Prakash and others received the body and laid wreath. District officials, elected representatives, police and people in large number paid their last respects to the soldier. Tilak died on jammu and Kashmir highway on this fourth as an avalanche swept him off. He was involved in clearing snow blocking the highway. Heart rending scenes were witnessed as his aged parents and relatives were wailing uncontrollably. SUICIDE SUSPECTED AS MURDER;Residents of Tyagaraja colony here have suspected the death of one Balakrishna. Body of a laborer Balakrishna was found hanging from the ceiling of his house yesterday evening. People alleged that the legs of the deceased were touching the ground comfortably and it cannot be a case of suicide. Police have registered a case. The cause for the death is not known. Deceased leaves wife and two children. The family was not at the house at the time of the incident. His small children had a shock of life as they witnessed the horrible sight on their way back from school. STAY FOR ELECTION CONTINUES;He stay brought for the election of president and vice president of Madikeri CMC continues. The High court has continued the stay till 21st of this month. A former member Chami has brought a stay for the election stating that the election held for the council was illegal. He said in his query that the number of wards to the CMC was increased without the consent of the ministry. The issue of increasing the wards was not brought before the cabinet. However the election commission had Okayed the election. |
