90.77% ACHIEVEMENT IN PULSE POLIO DROPS;

The district has achieved 90.77% target in administering pulse polio. The authorities stated that the polio drop administration will continue till tomorrow and they have hit 90.77% on the first day itself. The programme will continue again between tenth and twelfth February.

The district health department aims to cover about 55,443 children under polio vaccination in Kodagu. 50,330 children were administered drops yesterday. About 468 booths were opened in different parts of the district and 1918 health staff and volunteers are involved in the programme. Three district hospitals, 29 primary health centers and four community centers were also involved in administering drops. Two mobile booths and 21 transit booths are also functioning.

Zilla Panchayatnh president Deergakeshi Shivanna inaugurated the programme at her home town Murnad by administering drops to a baby.

District surgeon Dr.Ajith kumar, DHJO Rangaiah and members of Ratary club were present at Madikeri district hospital.

SPORTS SCHOOL TO CELEBRATE DIAMOND JUBILLEE;

Sports School at Kudige is all set to celebrate golden jubilee.

Commissioner of Youth services and Sports, Amarkumar Pandey yesterday visited the sports school and held a meeting with the concerned to celebrate the golden jubilee in a befitting manner.

Addressing scribes after the meeting, Pandey said that the programme would be held on this 21st and 22nd. He said that to commemorate the occasion, a state level hockey and volley ball tournament would be held at Kudige and a cash prize of rupees fifty, thirty and twenty thousand would be distributed to the winning teams. The tournament would be restricted to Sports school teams spread in the state. There are about 27 sports schools in the state. The SAI hostel at Kodagu will be merged with the sports hostel shortly and the formalities are nearing completion, he disclosed.

Pandey announced that a national bravery school would be started at Kudige during this academic year and indoor stadiums would be completed in the school premises.Rupees 1.28 crores is released to build an indoor stadium and the work is on.

The Spots School started during 1983 has sixty students and the strength would be increased to hundred, according to pandey.

TIGER MENACE RAMPANT IN SOUTH;

Tiger menace in south Kodagu is on the increase sending waves of fear at south Kodagu.

Tigers are seen even during day time, prowling inside the villages and children are afraid to go to schools in some places. Many parts of estates lying close to Nagarahole national park are abandoned as tigers frequent these places day and night.

A complaint was lodged with the forest department at West Nemmale village as a tiger has killed a cow and calf belonging to Chattangada Navin. The tiger attacked the herd of cows tied inside a shed and killed the mother and the calf. Dozens of cows and buffaloes are being killed in South Kodagu by the tigers since two months and forest department is turning a blind eye, the village heads are complaining. They have appealed to the department to curb the menace and catch the tigers.
