ILLEGAL SAND LIFTING OPPOSED;Madikeri january 8 People from in and around Siddapur held a protest yesterday opposing sand lifting from river Cauvery at Guhya village near Siddapur. The protestors alleged that the sand was being illegally lifted and the Gram panchayath is hand in glow with the persons involved. Several appeals to them to stop lifting went in vein, they said. They stated that the walls on the houses on the river side are cracking and sand lifting has to be stopped immediately. Gram Panchayath president V.K.Basheer arrived at the spot and received memorandum. Protestors cautioned that they will intensify protest if the sand lifting is not stopped. DRUNKARD ATTACKS PLANTER;A drunken laborer attempting to kill his wife hit his owner with a bill hook in rage at Nelaji in South kodagu. The incident occured yesterday. Chandru a labourer came home fully drunk and raised a quarrel with his wife.As he tried to attack her with a bill hook she ran to their owner Jagadish for hiding. Since the wife did not come, Chandru held one of his child and began to threaten that he is going to kill the baby if she does not appear. Planter Jagadish rushed to the spot and tried to over power him. As he was rescuing the child, Chandru attacked him at the back, causing severe injury. Jagadish was shifted to hosital for treatment and a case is registered against Chandru. HERE, THE STUDENTS RUN THIS COLLEGE;Though most of the institutions are run by the fee amount, this first grade college demands additional money from students to run it. "If you do not pay, do not come to college" the principal threatens. Students of Government first grade college at Virajpet explain their plight with pain. They say that the college has shortage of lecturers and if they demand to fill the vacancy, they will be forced to shed money to employ remporary lecturers. This correspondent bumped against three students of the college bunking class and wandering in the town. Asked about the reason, they stated the above facts. "If we go and tell our parents, they will force us to work in the estate. If we do not pay excess rupees two hundred, principal will not allow us to go to college", they said. Principal Krishnegowda was asked about it. he agreed that 90% of the students have paid rupees two hundred each towards employing temporary lecturers. "What can I do if the post is not filled and if there is no money in the fund?" he tried rebuke. Its a pity that the poor students who opt government colleges are also being swindled. |
