KODAGU HAS 706 HIV POSITIVE CASES

Madikeri January 21, 2008

In an alarming revelation, Kodagu has 706 HIV positive cases. According to a survey conducted by district health department between 2002 and 07, 706 cases were proved as positive. About eight AIDS patients died in the district in Virajpet taluk during 2006 and 07.

However possibilities are there that many others patients would have done the tests outside the district in private nursing homes and could be hiding the facts fearing public wrath and condemnation.

According to health authorities, HIV is found mostly in youth between the age group of 15 and 35. In about 1113 tests conducted at Gonicoppal during last year, 49 HIV positive cases were found. The health department conducted tests for Tb during last year. 145 TB cases were found and among them 5 AIDs cases were detected. A baffling 2 – 3 case of HIV positive is being reported from all the government hospitals each month.

Responsible citizens of Kodagu feel that lack of awareness about AIDs is the main reason for the spread of the disease. They have urged the district administration to take up the cases seriously and indulge in serious propaganda against aids and its effect on the family and social front.
