ONE DIES IN ROAD MISHAPMadikeri March 6, 2008 One person died and another injured in a bike – jeep collision at Heggala near Virajpet. The incident occurred yesterday. According to police, the speeding bike with a youth Rajesh, 24 on wheel bashed against a jeep coming from opposite direction in a curve. Rajesh died caught under the jeep, while the pillion rider Subramani suffered head injury as he was thrown on to ground. Subramani is shifted to Mangalore for higher treatment. Virajpet rural police have registered a case and arrested the jeep driver Shafiq. CALL TO PROTECT BIRD SPECIESEnvironmentalist Suresh Hublikar has called upon the people to protect Bird species. Addressing a function at Ponnampet yesterday, Suresh Hublikar stated that the birds are most important for the running of life and protection of environment. They play main role in pollination and they are held in high esteem even from the times of Vedas. Hublikar released the second edition of a book ‘ kagaratnagalu’, authored by Dr.narasimhan on birds. He regretted that lakes and forests are disappearing in the names of development. Sparrows and crows are reaching extinction, he feared. About thirty five varieties of birds have disappeared from Bangalore, he alleged. He informed that Bangalore is the seventh dungeon in the country due to plastic menace, vehicle pollution, environmental and air pollution. He said that the Bangalore will face acute drinking water problem in future. He called upon the youth to be aware of the environmental importance and urged to protect western ghat. Hublikar opined that the Greater tacauvery project should be implemented for the benefit of environment. Author Dr.Narasimhan spoke on the occasion and said that though he is not a bird specialist, his interest and support from others prompted him to study them and bring out a book. Coorg Wild ife society, Kodagu pratishtana and Forestry College have jointly organized the programe. President of pratishtana, Arun Monnappa, B.B.Chengappa of CWS, Dr.C.G.Kushalappa from Forestry College were present. Dr.Kushalappa in his speech said that Dr.narasimhan has drawn more than fifty thousang greeting cards of birds and has entered Guinness book of record. RAIS ADVICE FOR YOUTH TO KEEP AWAY FROM CRIME;President of the Jai Karnataka organization, Muthappa Rai has called upon youth to keep away from crimes. Talking to this correspondent at Somwarpet yesterday, Rai said that crime is not good for anyone. Supporting his past by stating that circumstances made him an underworld don, he said that he is very much refined now and will work for the betterment of the society. He took pride in stating that his wife hails from Kodagu, he said that he will strive for the progress of the district. He was at Somwarpet to organize free food distribution to devotees at Sree Shanthamallikarjuna Swamy temple at Pushpagiri. Free food is being served by him to thousands of devotees for two days on the occasion of Shivaratri. TIGER TO BE CAUGHT;The ACFO S.D.Patak has said that the under officers are ordered to capture tiger creating menace in south Kodagu. In a statement he has doubted that it could either be a tiger or a Cheetah which is attacking cows. Whichever is the animal it will be caught after tranquilizing, he said. His order comes after the enraged people of south jkodagu had served an ultimatum to capture the tiger immediately or face a severe protest. |
