FIELD MARSHAL CARIAPPA REMEMBERED;Madikeri January 29, 2009 The first army commander of independent India, Field marshal K.M.Cariappa was fondly remembered yesterday during his 110th birthday. The students of Bharatiya Vidyabhavan Kodagu Vidyalaya, Cariappas daughter Nalini and the district administration laid flowers on the ‘Samadhi Sthan’. Gems from Cariappa’s books and talks were read by the students of BVKV. Nalini cariappa distributed prizes to the winners of essay competition conducted for students. Assistant Commissioner Akram Pasha, Head quarters assistant Chikkathammaiah, Sub Inspector Prakash Gowda and others were present. Talking to press during the occasion, Cariappa’s son Air marshal(Retd) cariappa called upon the younger generation to inculcate the qualities of his father. Answering a query, he said that the number of youngsters joining army is reducing as they are going after ITBT opportunities where the pay is high. He however opined that the youth may once again look at the army as even ITBT financial structure is also under threat. He regretted that the forest wealth in Kodagu is being destroyed and people should fight to preserve it. Meanwhile, the CMC president P.D.Ponnappa garlanded the statue of Cariappa located at the entrance of Madikeri town. Member of CMC, Unnikrishna, hotel association president Aiyanna and others were present. LADY SUPERINTENDENT TO DISTRICT JAILFor the first time in the history of Kodagu district jail, a lady is appointed as a superintendent. A BDS graduate Dr.Anitha has taken charge as the superintendent on this 23rd and has gone on leave. A KPSC candidate, Anitha has served in Mysore prison and is posted to Madikeri on probationary period. Talking to this correspondent, she said that this job is challenging and she foresees no hurdles on the way. She disclosed that the prison will be moved to a new, spacious building and the inauguration would be held on February 18th. The district in charge minister Krishna Palemar has been invited to inaugurate the new building, located at Karnangeri, six kilometers away from madikeri. Anitha said that a requisition to post a permanent doctor to the prison and to provide a vehicle is placed before the Inspector general of Police (Prisons) Negi. PREMA CARIAPPA FELICITATED;Chairman of central social welfare department, Prema Cariappa was felicitated at two places yesterday. Ammathi Kodava Samaj and Ammathi school had organized different programmes to honour prema as she had released maximum amount for the development through here grant. Rupees 22 lakhs was released for the school ground at Ammathi and rupees two lakhs to the compound wall of kodava Samaj. Addressing the gathering, Prema Cariappa stated that she has released maximum amount to kodagu for development. Listing out the grants, she said that rupees 2.5 crores was released for various projects and she will continue to do so along with other places in the state. Vice chairman of coffee board, Dr.Kaverappa addressed the gathering and regretted that the growers are not getting enough price for the coffee they are growing. He called upon Kodava Samaj members to spread their service and adopt poor children to provide education and encourage cultural programmes. President of Samaj, Suguna Muthanna addressed the gathering. Vice president Subhash Bheemaiah presided over.Secretary Vasanth compered. |
