PEOPLE OPPOSE SHIFTING OF PRISON;Residents and different organizations, including BAR association Virajpet have opposed proposal to shift prison from Virajpet. Virajpet Sub Jail was built by British during 1932 and was housing around thirty under trials. Since a new and spacious prison was built at Madikeri recently the authorities are planning to shift the taluk sub jail to Madikeri. Shifting of old building received more fuel after the five prisoners who escaped from K.R.Nagar prison ten months ago. The protestors told this correspondent that it was convenient for the courts at Virajpet to have under trials at Virajpet. They also said that the authorities have spent rupees 5.9 lakhs for the renovation of the building recently. They have also revealed that already the sub jail is empty with no under trials lodged here. They alleged that the sub jail has about six staff members and at present the jailer is sitting in the empty building since about three months. The families who wish to meet the under trials have to come to Madikeri, a long way with much inconvenience, they said. The BAR association has said that the state prison authorities had sent a letter to shift the under trials temporarily till the building was renovated. They alleged that though the letter was sent, the staff was transferred for no reason. It is an indirect action taken to shift the sub jail, they allege. The BAR association, Naagarika Horata Samity through their president M.T.Cariappa have said that they have decided to appeal to the state prison authorities not to shift the jail. If they do not receive any positive response before 25th of this month, a protest would be organized. Virajpet Congress Minorities wing has also extended its support for the protest. FALLS TO DEATHAn estate worker died as he fell from a tree. According to police, a Tribe Belliappa, 23 was cutting the branches of a tree in a coffee estate at Maragodu yesterday. He had a fall from sixty feet and died on the spot. |
