POOJA, PAADAYATRA AND RAINFALLMadikeri March 11, 2009 The much awaited blossom shower blessed Kodagu with moderate to heavy rainfall yesterday night. It co insided with special poojas being offered in many temples and a paadayatra to Talacauvery seeking rainfall. It rained heavily in many parts of Madikeri and Virajpet taluks and moderate rainfall was observed in few other places. While the water starved lakes and rivers received a temporary fill, coffee planters in many parts let a sigh of relief. Coffee plantation requires at least forty cents of rainfall as blossom shower at this season and it poured more than that. Kaladcha festival was celebrated at Paadi gguthappa temple yesterday. The Paradanda, Periyanda and other family heads perform the pooja every year and pray for rainfall and good crops each year. It is a belief that it will rain after the pooja and it co incided. Devatakka paradanda Chengappa, Paradanda Kaverappa, Pandanda Joyappa, Sannuvanda Kaverappa was present during the festival. Pooja was also held at Ganapathy temple Kushalnagar, at Talacauvery and other places. Meanwhile the Jayakarnataka organization, led by their state vice president Deepti Gowda and President Prasanna Bhat walked upto Talacauvery from Madikeri. Performing pooja at Chowdeshwari temple here, about fifty youth tread fifty kilometers upto Talacauvery without any solid food. Prasanna Bhat stated that it rained immediately after they performed mahapooja at the temple. BIKER DIES IN MISHAP;One person died on the spot and another received grievous injuries as the bike they were riding collided with a lorry. The incident occurred at Kushalnagar yesterday. A resident of Hunsur hangod, Chandra, 30 was riding the motor cycle at the time of the accident. He succumbed to injuries on the spot while the pillion rider Swamy was shifted to hospital. The lorry involved in the accident sped away from the spot and was caught by police near Kudige. Lorry driver Mahesh was arrested. CMC GAINS PROFIT IN AUCTIONINGThe City Municipal Council has earned a profit of rupees twelve lakhs more in the market auctioning compared to last year. The auction conducted under the chairmanship of the president P.D.Ponnappa fetched rupees 20, 73,900 lakhs as against rupees 7, 83, 500 rupees of the last year. The CMC has gained a net profit of rupees 12, 90,400. OFFICIALS DIRECTED TO HOLD FREE AND FAIR ELECTION;The assistant election officer and assistant commissioner Akram Pasha has asked the officials to brace themselves to hold the election in a free and fair manner. Akram Pasha held a meeting yesterday at Old Assembly hall and instructed the officials about the responsibilities and duties of the sector officials. He asked them to function fearlessly and strictly according to election guidelines and code. He said that the politicians have to get prior permission to stick or display cut outs, banners and posters. Head Quarters Assistant Chikkathammaiah spoke on the occasion and said that the sector officials would be given wireless sets and they should familiarize with the instrument to make use of it. Tahasildars, assistant election officer from Virajpet, Shanmukha Swamy, DYsP Prakash and others were present. |
