PROTEST AGAINST TURF SANCTIONMadikeri January 18, 2010 People representing various organizations and Taluk Panchayath at Ponnampet today held a protest against the government sanctioning Synthetic Turf ground to KALS, a residential school run by athlete Ashwini Nachappa and her husband Dutta Karumbaiah. Taluk panchayath members Addanda Cariappa, Shaji Achutan, Ramdas, advocate M.T.Cariappa, Kirgur Gram panchayath president Sara Chengappa and others staged a protest and said that the Chief Minister had promised to sanction a Synthetic Turf ground to Ponnampet and not to a private school. They alleged that Ashwini nachappa started a Sports Foundation to grab the government sanction and are using influence, starting from one of the Kodagu MLC to get the money to her school. They have said that Ponnampet has a sports school and family hockey festival would be held at Ponnampet and it is wise that the government sanctions fund to Ponnampet as promised.The agitators accused that the senior officer in Bangalore I,M,vital murthy had favoured a private school and helped them to get the sanction. They handed over a memorandum to speaker K.G.Bopaiah and he said that he will see to it that the Turf comes to Ponnampet. SURPRISED BOPAIAHSpeaker K.G.Bopaiah has expressed surprise over some of the people who were accusing him of recommending the funds to KALS School, baselessly. He agreed that he had written a letter to the government to sanction funds to KALS School and definitely not Synthetic Turf. Talking to media persons after receiving honor by Machimanda family at Ammathi, Bopaiah said that he will not allow anyone to own turf sanctioned to Ponnampet. Ponnampet is the suitable place for synthetic Turf Ground, he said.He had already spoken with the concerned to change the order. Gonikoppal APMC president Bose Mandanna,Arun Bheemaiah, Ravi Kushalappa,women socity president Asha poonacha, Daya Chengappa and others led the protest. EDCL to launch second power unitMadikeri January 17, 2010 The Energy Development Corporation Limited will launch its second unit of power generation using Harangi waters. The senior manager of the company Shivasubramanyam told this correspondent that the rupees twenty five crore second project is all ready and they expect to commission it by monsoon. He informed that the first unit is producing 9 MW power and it has produced 261 million unit of power in eleven years. They expect to produce 6 MW power using the second unit. The EDCL owned by Amar Singh of Samajwadi Party and mega star Amitabh Bachan. EDCL functions through water being supplied to Harangi reservoir. The power in the first unit is being produced, utilizing the water being let out canals for irrigation purpose. According to Shivasubrahmanyam, power would be produced in the second unit by using the inflow of water during monsoon. Hence the production will be possible temporarily during monsoon only. The EDCL sells power to government at rupees 2.80 rupees per unit and this contract lasts for thirty years. It began its production during 1999. Kodagu requires around 16 MW power a day and EDCL is producing 9 MW power a day. The additional production of 6 MW a day may suffice the need of Kodagu. However, the generated power cannot be diverted only to Kodagu and it is reaching the Kushalnagar KPTCL Grid. SHOOTS SELFAn agriculturist Parlakoti Kenchappa, 48 shot himself to death at Kattemadu village near Murnad. According to police, Kenchappa was suffering from Cancer and he was worried as enough money was poured for its cure all in vain. As he needed more money for treatment, Kemchappa decided to end his life. He held a double barrel gun, dug a pit near his feet inside a shed near his hose, pressed the trigger with the help of a stick and aimed the tip to his neck. The bullets passed through his neck,, killing him on the spot. His body was found in a pool of blood. The crime took place yesterday. CAR FESTIVAL AT SHANTHALLI;Car festival of Sree Kumaralingeshwara was being held since a week at Shanthalli near Somwarpet. Thousands of people have been gathering to witness the festival and do ‘Jatra Shopping”. Addressing the closing function yesterday, Sri.Sadashiva Swamiji of Kirikodli Mutt, Kodlipet opined that the society cannot survive if it ignores religion and cultural values. Temple Dharmadarshi K.K.Subbaiah presided over the function. Gram Panchayath president Indira Somaiah, committee president K.S.Sundar were present. Taluk Panchayath president Lokesh and retired teacher Singrappa were felicitated on the occasion. |
