DISTRICT LIBRARY GETS A FACE LIFT;Madikeri July 6, 2010 Located in the Fort premises, the pldest Library with a long history here is getting a face lift. The building is repaired at a cost of rupees 4.5 lakhs and new books are stocked for the benefit of readers. Surprisingly, this library attracts a good crowd of readers inspite of the onslaught of computers and internet! The Librarian Leelavaty tells this correspondent that they have about 2, 84,776 books covering various topics and stories under the sky. It caters to the need of young and old, researchers and others. About eighteen district, state and national level newspapers, monthly, weekly and fortnightly magazines satiate the thirst of news mongers. While the quantity of Kannada books is more here, the library caters to the need of English, Hindi, Urdu and Malayalam readers too. The stock has books for children, on studies, law, degree, history, religion, story and novels. Leelavathy opined that they accept books as donations also and recommend the state office to buy books published locally. The librarian opined that they have space problem to keep the new books which keep coming from Calcutta central office. Meanwhile the district library has branches spread all over Kodagu. All the 98 Gram Panchayaths have branches and apart from them, two branches at Somwarpet, one each at Madikeri and Virajpet. Leelavathy says that they have building problem in almost all the places. Even the central library here also needs more funds to improve the building. DIES IN A MISHAPKokkalers Bharath, son of Thammaiah from madapur here died in a road mishap at Bangalore bon 4th. An employee of Indian Airlines, Bharath, 32 was traveling in a bike as a pillion rider. A BTS bus allegedly hit them from behind at Hebbal road. Bharath died on the spot and a case was registered by RT nagar police. The cremation took place at Madikeri. |
