ELEPHNAT HERD KILLS TWO

A herd of elephants killed a duo at Hampapur near Kodlipet on fourth.

In a bizarre incident, a planter Revappa, 55 and his estate worker Ramesh 25 were killed at interval. Revappa went missing on fourth as he went to estate. His family sent Ramesh to look for him.

Revappa was reportedly attacked by elephants. He was trampled and thrown to a distatnce. He fell dead in a pool of blood and mud. Ramesh who went in search of him was returning home from the estate. A herd of elephants from nowhere attacked him from all sides. He was trampled and crumpled to death.

People protested before forest officials who arrived at the spot and complained that the department is not taking any action to provide protection from elephant menace since two decades. They demanded huge compensation on the spot.

Forest officials DFO kantaraj, ACFO Prasanna Kumar and RFO Jayaprakash arrived at the spot and distributed rupees five thousand to the families for the last rites. Tahasildar Devaraj distributed rupees one thousand each to the families. They assured that the government will release rupees three lakh each to the families of the deceased.

Former MLC S.G.Medappa who went to the spot urged the forest officials to build solar fence and dig trenches to protect people.

COMPENSATION RAISED

MLA Appachu ranjan yesterday succeeded in getting the elephant compesation amount rised to rupees two lakh from one in session.

Ranjan mebtioned about the deadly elephant menace in Kodagu which is taking life after life. He urged the chief minister to rise the compensation amount of rupees one lakh being paid to the kith and kin from rupees one wo two lakh. The CM Yediyurappa immediately agreed to the demand.

Co incidentally, two deaths have occurred on fourth in Kodagu due to elephant attack. Appachu ranjan has been instrumental in rising the compensation amount from rupees twenty five thousand each time during the tenure of various chief ministers.

THREE UNDER ARREST FOR ROBBERY

Virajpet police have arrested Nijam,19, Kabir,21 and harriS 20, natives of Virajpet for attacking a person and robbing cash and wrist watch watch from him on fifth.

According to police, the accused waylaid one Aithappa, returning from hospital. He was carrying rupees four thousand in cash for the treatment of his wife who was hospitalized. The trio attacked him in a foot path at night and made away with cash and a wrist watch.

Virajpet police succeeded in arresting the trio and sent them to judicial custody.
