‘LAXMANA’ BIDS ADIEU

Madikeri July 14, 2010

The ailing tusker Laxmana breathed its last Monday night at Dubare.

Laxmana was attacked by wild elephants one night, eight months ago. Wild elephants entered the camp and attacked Laxmana in tied position. He had a severe leg fracture and injury and the treatments went in vain.

Laxmana was captured from forest six years ago as he was rampaging crops and posing life threat. Aged 58, the pachyderm went immobile two days ago and breathed its last yesterday night. The cremation took place yesterday in the presence of forest officials and staff. Two of his ivories were removed and taken to custody.

About five elephants have died in Dubare camp since a year due to various reasons. Elephant ‘Mandaara’ also died due to attack from the wild elephants. Two others due to heart attack and one attained natural death.

Dubare elephant camp houses about nineteen elephants and no regular doctor is appointed here to take care of the animals. A doctor on call has to arrive from Hunsur and obviously the ailing elephants will not get constant attention.
